An Important Security Message from the HMRC Website

An email from 'HMRC Online services - test@test.com' is being issued, stating the recipient has 1 new ALERT message, and should log into their Online Account to read the message.

The email contains a link to a fraudulent website that requests the disclosure of personal account information and password. The email is not from HMRC. If you have received a copy please forward it to them at phishing@hmrc.gsi.gov.uk.

Business Insurance

Are you adequately covered for the risks associated with your business? Despite recent mergers there are still knowledgeable and suitably qualified local insurance brokers able to take a personal interest in your business and suggest the insurance package appropriate to your needs. We will be happy to recommend a suitable broker.

Is Your IFA Working for You?

Does your Financial Planner work with you to establish clear short, medium and long range lifestyle / financial objectives?

Achieving those objectives often includes the use of pensions, ISA’s, property, equity investment etc. but it’s important to have a clear outcome in mind before taking any financial decision just because there is an apparently attractive tax break on offer.

Please tell us if you would like to meet with a local, informed financial planner who will take a more holistic approach to your affairs.

New VAT Rules Came Into Force this Spring

From 1 April 2010 a change in the law will make it compulsory for all businesses with a turnover greater than £100,000 to file their VAT returns online. Any VAT due will have to be paid electronically. This includes paying by bank giro credit at your local bank but you do need to request deposit slips from HMRC.

The rules also apply to all businesses that register for VAT on or after 1 April 2010, regardless of turnover.

Even if turnover drops below £100,000 traders must continue using the online service. HMRC has already indicated its intention to require all VAT-registered businesses to file their returns online and pay electronically by 2012.

Although registered traders have the choice of using the free HMRC online filing software, or a commercial program Alan Forrester & Co. are registered to undertake this chore on behalf of our clients.

Online Security

Electronic communication and transactions are a key part of modern business but the advantages that online transactions provide can also give rise to the risk of fraud - individuals claiming to be someone they are not, and obtaining information they are not entitled to. You need to be alert.

Although major financial organisations e.g. banks, HMRC etc. continuously monitor systems and customer records to guard against fraudulent activity, the methods fraudsters use to obtain information is constantly changing. Accordingly banks etc. provide regular updates on the type of scams of which they are aware.

The main risk involves the stealing of identity or access details. You should therefore do everything you can to ensure that the identifiers and passwords you use when accessing financial organisations are kept secure and updated regularly. You should never divulge your login details to anyone and report any suspicious activity immediately.
